God, when I’m partaking in something as simple as eating fruit for a snack, remind me that even then You are watching over me as the apple of Your eye. Amen.

MOUNTAIN LION MAMAS

The LORD . . . will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.

HOSEA 11:10

At lakes near national parks of the West Coast, every so often someone will spot a mountain lion. These elusive cats are formidable predators with strong jaws and sharp teeth. You don’t want to be caught on the wrong side of the sliding glass door when a mountain lion lurks outside. Their muscles make their strikes deadly as they protect their territories and provide for their prides.

A different scene occurs in the den of the mountain lion where the cubs are kept. One brave cub stumbles forward at the return of its mother back with dinner caught fresh. The cub glances up at its mom and rubs affectionately against her jaws, grazing the giant teeth. The cubs trust that their mother is their guardian and protector. She would not use her teeth to harm her cubs.

As our Parent, God has characteristics that can be intimidating. He is strong, fierce, and a warrior for good across the world. Oftentimes in Scripture He is depicted as a lion. This is meant to comfort and encourage us. His roar dispels the Enemy and calls us home, where we can nestle next to His fierce jaws, unafraid. Mountain lions may be difficult to spot, but we can always detect God our Lion next to us in a protective parental stance.
